Mid-July to mid-September · At both stands
Locally Grown Garden Vegetables From Our Commerce Township Farm
All summer long on the northwest side of metro Detroit, the same stands that hand you sweet corn are stacked with whatever the garden gave up that morning: tomatoes, zucchini, squash, fresh lettuce, and more, grown in Michigan soil by the same family that's farmed it for 150 years.
The day's picking is always on the farm update

Two Ways to Use Up a Zucchini Haul
Zucchini Bread Loaf
1 ½ cup flour · 1 tsp. cinnamon · ½ tsp. baking soda · ½ tsp. salt · ½ tsp. nutmeg · ¼ tsp. baking powder · 1 cup sugar · 1 cup shredded unpeeled zucchini · 1 egg · ¼ cup cooking oil · ¼ tsp. shredded lemon peel · ½ cup walnuts or chocolate chips (optional)
Stir the dry ingredients together. Beat sugar, zucchini, and egg, add oil and lemon peel, then fold the flour mixture in, plus nuts or chips. Bake in a greased 8x4 loaf pan at 350 for 55-60 minutes, until a stick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in the pan, then finish on a rack. Makes 1 loaf.
Whatever ripened this morning
Sautéed Zucchini & Squash
Zucchini and squash in ½ inch slices, skin on · olive oil · sweet onion (optional) · Parmesan
Heat olive oil in a skillet on high, add the slices, and drop to medium-high. Sauté to your tenderness, tossing in sweet onion along the way if you like, and hit it with Parmesan just before serving.
Brussels sprouts, later in the season
Garden Vegetable Questions, Answered
What vegetables does Long Family Orchard grow?
The summer garden runs tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, fresh lettuce, and Brussels sprouts later in the season, plus whatever else comes ripe along the way. Each day's picking is on the farm update.
When are garden vegetables in season?
Roughly mid-July to mid-September, riding alongside sweet corn season at both stands.
Where do I buy them?
At the drive-thru produce stands: the Main Barn and Cider Mill lot at 1540 E Commerce Rd, and the red shed on Bogie Lake Rd just north of Commerce Rd.
Are the vegetables grown on your farm?
Yes, in the same Commerce Township soil the Long family has farmed since 1876, picked and sold by the family.
Do you know what's at the stand before I drive out?
Always check the daily farm update or call the Hotline at (248) 360-3774, the garden decides the menu and sellouts happen.
What comes after vegetable season?
The best part: apples, pumpkins, and the Cider Mill open the first week of September.
