Fresh Bi-Color Sweet Corn: Our Drive-Thru Corn Stand in Commerce Township

Ever dig through a store bin of corn everyone else has picked over? Skip it. On the northwest side of metro Detroit, Long Family Orchard hand-picks bi-color sweet corn every single morning, bags it by the half dozen and dozen, and hands it through your car window at two drive-thru stands. We never sell yesterday's corn. Ever.

Season runs late July to at least Labor Day · Check the farm update before driving out

The freshness rule

Fresh Sweet Corn, Picked This Morning or Not Sold at All

That's the whole secret. There isn't another one.

Our crew is in the corn rows every morning of the season, hand-harvesting that day's supply. It's bagged by the half dozen or full dozen, it's non-GMO, and when the day's picking sells out, the stand closes rather than reach for yesterday's corn. That morning-to-window freshness is what makes local sweet corn actually taste sweet, and it's why regulars call it the best corn on the cob around.

Fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and other garden vegetables ride along at the stands all summer too.

How to Cook Fresh Sweet Corn

Stovetop

Bring water to a boil, drop in the husked corn, and cook 5 minutes. The water doesn't need to reboil, and don't let the corn stand in it afterward. That's the entire recipe for perfect corn on the cob.

Roasting on the Grill

Fresh-picked corn needs no soaking. Set it on the grill in the husk and roast, turning often, until the husks are steaming hot, about 7-8 minutes. Husk and serve.

Freezing for Winter

Husk, blanch 30-45 seconds in boiling water, rinse cold immediately, scrape the kernels off with a sharp knife, and pack quart freezer bags with no head space. August corn in a January chowder.

Corn questions

Sweet Corn Questions, Answered

How does the drive-thru corn stand work?

Pull into the Main Barn lot at 1540 E Commerce Rd or up to the big red corn shed on Bogie Lake Rd, and we hand your pre-bagged corn right through the window. No parking, no farmers market lines, seven days a week in season.

Is the corn really picked fresh every day?

Every morning of the season, by hand. We never sell corn from the day before, if a day's picking runs out, the stand closes until tomorrow's.

What kind of corn do you grow?

Bi-color Michigan sweet corn, the yellow-and-white kernels this state's summers are famous for, and it's non-GMO.

Is this like Silver Queen corn?

Silver Queen fans feel right at home here: our bi-color corn brings the same white-kernel sweetness, plus the fuller flavor the yellow kernels add. One bite settles it.

How is it sold?

Pre-bagged by the half dozen or full dozen, fresh sweet corn for sale right through your car window, so nobody's pawing through a bin ahead of you.

When is sweet corn season in Michigan?

Late July until at least Labor Day, and the corn is harvested fresh every morning of it. Labor Day's special hours are on the farm update so our crew gets some holiday with their families too. Spring works the other way around here: asparagus opens the year.

What if you sell out before I get there?

It happens, fresh corn picked daily has limits. Wondering if we're open right now? The daily farm update and the Hotline at (248) 360-3774 always know, and earlier in the day is the safest bet.

Tonight's Corn Is Still in the Field

It'll be picked in the morning, bagged by noon, and through your car window by dinnertime. That's how sweet corn is supposed to work.
